Terms You Need to Know About Hair Dyes

Finding a hair dye that is going to work for you can be incredibly confusing and overwhelming. You will find that salons will use certain terms when talking about hair coloring and products and then you find that your local drugstore will use yet another set of terms and categories. So, to help clear up some of the confusion I have provided the basic information you will need to know about hair coloring products.

1. Temporary Hair Color

  • Contain no alkaline or peroxide - referred to as nonoxidizing hair color.
  • Coats to outside of the hair with dyes that do not penetrate.
  • Generally will wash out after 1 or 2 shampoos
  • 2. Semi-Permanent Hair Color (Level 1)

  • Contain least amount of ingredients that can affect the internal composition of your hair
  • Minimal amount of dye
  • Contain low alkaline levels and have no peroxide
  • Also referred to as non-oxidizing because they contain no peroxide
  • Will wash out after a few shampoos
  • 3. Demi Hair Color

  • You will also hear this referred to as level 2, mid and intermediate
  • These come in the form of gel, cream or pastes
  • Applied to the entire head or to just the roots of your hair
  • Contain low levels of peroxide and alkaline
  • Good for modest changes in hair color - You won't be able to go from brown to blond hair using this level of hair coloring
  • 4. Permanent Hair Color

  • Also referred to as level 3, bleaching, and highlighting
  • These are available in gels, creams and lotions
  • Applied by shampooing into the hair or applied to the roots
  • Make permananent changes to your hair color
  • This level of hair coloring will require touch-ups as your hair grows
  • Contain the highest level of peroxides and have a high concentration of alkalines
  • 5. Gradual or Progessive Dyes

  • Contains lead acetate
  • Most frequently used by men for covering gray hair
  • Change in color is gradual so there is not an instant change in looks
  • Color fades gradually when product is no longer used
  • You should concern yourself with health aspects of using lead based products
  • My opinion is stay away from this type of hair coloring product due to the lead acetate that it contains
