About Hair Gels, Mouses and Styling Sprays

The common idea behind hair gel, mouse and styling sprays is that they all dry slowly which allows you time to apply the product to your hair and then perform the styling you want. As the hair product dries it will hold the style where you want it.

You will find a list of several ingredients on all hair styling products but the main element that gives you the ability to style your hair are called polymers. Polymers will appear on the hair product label as:

  • PVP - polyvinylpyrrolidone
  • PVP/VA - polyvinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acrylate
  • Polymers bind to your hair but are not easily absorbed into your hair and are light weight - The fact that these hair products are light weight and bind to your hair is what gives them the ability to hold hair in place. Essentially what you are doing is placing a very light weight plastic type of coating on your hair - When the gel, mouse or styling spray dries it has left a very fine-film of coating on your hair that gives it hold.

When you are shopping for these types of hair products keep the above facts in mind as like every hair styling product there are wild price variations and claims of formulations that give extra hold - I am sure you have seen more than your fair share of hype around hair styling gels by now - But remember that the key ingredient to giving your hair hold are the polymers, anything else that you read about hair styling products really is just hype and an excuse to charge you a small fortune on the product.
